TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"The Terminal" (2004), 7 p.m., ABC. A sweet soul (Tom Hanks) lands in New York at the wrong time. His country has had a coup; his visa is no good. He can't go back and he can't step onto American soil. The terminal is his home. That contrivance sets in motion a warm comedy. Some parts — including his reason for the trip — are extreme stretches. Others, including a friendship with Catherine Zeta-Jones, work wonderfully. Director Steven Spielberg was in his immaculate stage here making movies that seemed pristine, but not passionate. "Terminal" is a good movie, but no match for the zesty, vibrant Spielberg of old.

"Johnny and the Sprites" debut, 10 a.m., Disney Channel; also, 10 a.m. Sunday. John Tartaglia, a Tony nominee for "Avenue Q," plays a guy surrounded by amiable sea sprites. Each 11-minute segment has a new song by a Broadway-type composer; the theme song is from "Wicked" composer Stephen Schwartz. The result is fun and fresh and original. Some grown-up talent brightens the kid world.

OF NOTE

"Psych," 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., USA Network; then 9 p.m., NBC. This moderately enjoyable series has a young man pretending to be psychic detective because — well, no one believed him when he was just a great observer. It starts its second season Friday (Jan. 19) on USA; first, we get a marathon on USA and one — a missing teen, linked to a comic-book convention — on NBC.

"NCIS," 7 p.m., CBS. This rerun has a model dying while filming "Boot Camp Babes" at the Quantico Marine camp. Was it suicide or murder?

"Napoleon Dynamite" (2004), 6 p.m., Comedy Central; "Miss Congeniality" (2000), 6 p.m., TNT; "Bridget Jones's Diary" (2001), 8 p.m., ABC Family. This is a fine night for light entertainment. Catch any of these comedies. Also, you can try the action of "Spider-Man 2" (2004) at 6 p.m. on FX, or the music-dance zest of "Jump In" (2007) at 8 p.m. on Disney Channel.

"CSI:NY," 8 p.m., CBS. While probing a death in a mansion Danny is trapped in the panic room.

"Louis C.K.: Shameless," 8 p.m., HBO. The comic known as Louis C.K. has a stand-up special.

"Law & Order: SVU," 9 p.m., NBC. After dealing with a tough foster-care case, Dani Beck reconsiders her life choices.

"Saturday Night Live," 10:30 p.m., NBC. Jake Gyllenhaal hosts, with music by the Shins.
