Saint Louis’ Scott Smith, who had game highs of 15 points and eight rebounds, looked to pass in this situation against Kamehameha.

On the football field, Saint Louis defensive ends Scott Smith and Solomona Aigamaua wreaked havoc on Interscholastic League of Honolulu opponents all season.

Last night, the two seniors did the same to Kamehameha's basketball team by combining for 24 points and 12 rebounds to help the Crusaders rally past the visiting Warriors, 49-39, at McCabe Gym.

Saint Louis, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 2-1 in the ILH. Kamehameha, tied for No. 9, fell to 0-3.

The Crusaders face six-time defending league champion and No. 2-ranked 'Iolani (2-0) tonight; tipoff is set for 7:30 at McCabe. Smith and Aigamaua, who are two of the state's top college football prospects, have been busy visiting Mainland colleges the past few weeks but did not schedule any trips for this weekend.

"We planned it that way," said Smith, who is 6 feet 7 and 245 pounds. "With me and him in there at the same time, there's no rebound we can't get. When I'm in there by myself, I'm like triple-teamed. But with Mona in there, too, they can't box both of us out."

Smith finished with a game-high 15 points and eight rebounds, and also made three steals. Aigamaua, who is 6-3 and 205, added nine points and four rebounds, all in the second half, which began with Saint Louis trailing 27-20.

"Those two gave them a lot of second, third and fourth chances (to score)," Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi said.

Those multiple chances weren't as plentiful in the first half, when Kamehameha ended the first period with a 12-4 run to go up, 18-11, and then maintained the lead in the second quarter. Mitch Kauweloa's layup gave the Warriors a 27-17 lead with 2:09 remaining in the half.

But with Aigamaua in the second-half lineup, things changed in a hurry. He scored four points and grabbed three rebounds, and 6-5 forward Jamison Miller added three points, two rebounds and one assist as the Crusaders outscored Kamehameha 14-3 in the third period and never trailed again.

They pushed the lead to 43-33 with five minutes left in the game and the Warriors never got closer than seven points after that.

"We tried to wear them down that way, with both big guys in there," Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said.
