Goydos birdies last hole to win Sony Open

Advertiser Staff

Paul Goydos shot a 3-under 67, draining a birdie on the last hole, to rally past third-round leader Charles Howell III and win the $5.2 million Sony Open in Hawaii today at Waialae Country Club.

Goydos' four-day total was 14-under 266.

Howell III, who led Luke Donald by a stroke and Goydos by two entering the final round, shot even-par 70 today for a 13-under 267 total.

Goydos, playing a group ahead of Howell and Donald, birdied the final hole to take a one-shot lead over Howell.

Howell needed a birdie on No. 18 to tie. His third shot -- a chip off the green -- slid past the hole. His comeback putt for a tie went wide, settling for a par and second place.

Goydos wins $936,000. Howell gets $561,600.
