Zipper Lane work snarls H-1 westbound traffic

Advertiser Staff

Scheduled maintenance work on the H-1 Freeway's Zipper Lane today has caused a miles-long traffic jam on the freeway's westbound lanes and side roads.

The Zipper Lane is deployed, taking away two westbound lanes on the freeway.

Westbound traffic was reported backed up as far as Kalihi.

The state scheduled maintenance work on the Zipper Lane, from the Ke'ehi interchange to the H-1/H-2 merge in Waipahu, from 12:30 a.m. today to 5:30 a.m. tomorrow.

The Department of Transportation in a news release said the work was scheduled on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday "to ensure the smallest possible impact on traffic."

The Zipper Lane will be open to eastbound morning traffic tomorrow from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m., its regular hours of operation.

The Zipper Lane barriers are deployed so crews can repaint the 15-mile-long Zipper Lane guideline, replace 60 damaged barrier sections and perform maintenance work on overhead signs.
