Hundreds turn out for MLK Day parade

Advertiser Staff

Several hundred people enjoyed today's 19th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade through Waikiki, which featured marching units, bands and peace advocates.

"It's an important day," said Candrice Ellickson, a tourist from Minnesota who arrived early with her mother. "Martin Luther King was a great man, a great peacekeeper."

Kimo Scott closed his business, OK Hardware & Construction Supply Co., so he could attend. He said he was there to show his respect for King's dream of equality and for his tireless efforts to fight against racial opression.

"This is the least we can do to pay tribute to that," Scott said.
