Hokule'a and Alingano Maisu set sail Thursday morning

The voyaging canoes Hokule'a and Alingano Maisu are scheduled to set sail Thursday morning from Kawaihae on the Big Island, on the first leg of a voyage into Micronesia and Japan.

Voyage leadership met today to study weather, condition of the canoes and crews and decided to give the crews a rest day tomorrow before beginning the trip. The leadership meeting included Hokule'a captain Bruce Blankenfeld, Maisu captain Shorty Bertelmann and navigator Chadd Paishon, and escort vessel Kama Hele skipper Mike Taylor. The Kama Hele arrived at Kawaihae overnight after leaving Honolulu Sunday.

The canoes' departure has been held up by extremely strong winds in the first channel they must cross, the 'Alenuihaha, between the Big Island and Maui. The winds and seas were expected to moderate somewhat tomorrow.

Mission spokeswoman Kathy Thompson said crews are dealing with last-minute details in the final hours before sailing and will load fresh produce tomorrow.
