UH looks at non-violent change pioneers

A presentation on the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Queen Lili'uokalani; and Mahatma Gandhi and their commitment to non-violent social change will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the UH-Manoa Campus' East-West Center.

The program is held in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 15), the anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy (Jan. 17), and the year-long 100th anniversary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi's 'Satyagraha' movement of non-violent resistance in the pursuit of truth.

Featured speakers:

  • Andre Wooten, leading Civil Rights attorney, vice president of the African American Lawyers Association of Hawaii, and advocate for social justice

  • Lynette Hi'ilani Cruz, assistant professor of Anthropology at HPU, EWC alumna, and chair of Ka Lei Maile Ali'i Hawaiian Civic Club

  • Steve Kuhio Vogeler, East-West Center degree fellow, Ph.D. candidate and lecturer in Political Science, and scholar of non-violent social change.
