Longs Drugs buys three pharmacies from Florida chain

By Andrew Gomes
Advertiser Staff Writer

Longs Drug Stores plans to add three more small retail pharmacies in Hawai'i as part of a purchase of four pharmacies from a Florida company.

Longs said it has agreed to purchase four pharmacies from PharMerica Inc. in a transaction expected to be completed in 60 to 90 days.

The Hawai'i pharmacies are in Kailua on O'ahu, and Kihei and Wailuku on Maui. The fourth pharmacy is in California.

The expansion comes as national drugstore chain Walgreens is pushing ahead with plans to enter the Hawai'i market with two stores on O'ahu. The four pharmacies being acquired by Longs average 1,800 square feet and will be renamed Longs Pharmacy upon completion of the sale. Financial terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
