Single week nets 19 drunk driving arrests on Big Island

Ninteen motorists were arrested for drunk driving on the Big Island from Jan. 9 through Jan. 15, police said.Three of the drivers were involved in accidents. One was under the age of 21.
Since Jan. 1, Big Island police have made 44 DUI arrests compared to 35 during the same period last year, marking an increase of 26 percent.
Police also said there have been 103 major accidents so far this year compared with 108 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.
