Man arrested after indictment in hit-and-run death

A 22-year-old 'Ahuimanu man was arrested early this morning in connection with the hit-and-run death of a Kailua bicyclist in April 2005.

Jessie K. Boyd, of an Ahuimanu Road address, turned himself in at police headquarters. Aggregate bail for Boyd was set at $20,000.

An O'ahu grand jury indicted Boyd on Dec. 21 on charges of first-degree negligent homicide, failure to render aid and driving without a license stemming from the death on April 30, 2005, of Kailua resident Cortney Silva. A bench warrant for Boyd's arrest was issued when he was indicted.

Silva, 50, was riding a bicycle against the flow of traffic when he was struck head-on by a Kailua-bound 1992 Buick sedan on Kailua Road near Ho'olai Street about 3:45 a.m. He died at Castle Medical Center about 90 minutes later. Police said at the time that Silva was wearing dark clothing when the collision occurred and that his bicycle did not have a headlight.

The driver of the car that hit Silva, later identified as Boyd, who was 20 at the time, left the scene and was arrested a short time later in the parking lot of a nearby market.

At the time of the collision, police vehicular homicide investigators said that speed and alcohol may have been factors in the case.

In Hawaii, first-degree negligent homicide charges are brought against a driver who causes the death of another person while the driver is operating a vehicle in a negligent manner while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A conviction can result in a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
