TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"American Idol," 7 p.m., Fox. The second night of auditions heads to Seattle, once the birthplace of smart "grunge rock." The result is up to interpretation. One judge, Simon Cowell, says the Seattle singers were awful; another, Randy Jackson, says there were plenty of good ones. Tonight, we can decide for ourselves.

"China From the Inside," conclusion, 9 p.m., PBS. Amid the rising optimism of modern China, this documentary says, overpopulation (and, sometimes, corruption) has led to fierce problems. Pollution is rampant. Of the world's 10 most polluted cities, one critic says, five are Chinese. Massive projects have been launched, sometimes with huge impact. A dam project transplants an entire village, leaving farmers with nothing to do in a city apartment. Public comment, on such issues as AIDS and justice, is muted. It's an unsettling portrait of a country that is crucial to the 21st century.

OF NOTE

"According to Jim," 7 and 7:30 p.m., ABC. In the first episode, Jim takes care of the house while Cheryl mourns her uncle's death. Then he wonders just how long this will last. In the second, he heads to anger-management class.

"Friday Night Lights," 7 p.m., NBC. In a rerun, the team prepares for a big homecoming game, with Smash worried about impressing a college scout. Meanwhile, the paralyzed Jason is suspicious about the relationship between his girlfriend and Riggins.

"Criminal Minds," 8 p.m., and "CSI:NY," 9 p.m., both CBS. In the first, Gideon is in a diner, desperately trying to get a serial killer to reveal the location of his hostage. The second views the dark side of shopping-cart races. Really.

"Knights of Prosperity," 8 p.m., ABC. The clumsy gang's sole female hires a martial-arts expert. Mostly, he seems interested in attracting her and mocking everyone else.

"TV Land Myths and Legends," 8 p.m., TV Land. Mostly, this show is about refuting rumors that won't go away. (No, we're assured tonight, game-show boss Chuck Barris wasn't really a CIA assassin.) Last week's episode was monotone, because every rumor was dumped. Tonight, we learn that one — an R-rated reply on "The Newlywed Game" — is true. It's a quick and interesting half-hour.

"In Case of Emergency," 8:30 p.m., ABC. Sherman tries to retrieve his wife, who is under the influence of a guru (David Carradine).

"The Naked Trucker & T-Bones Show" debut, 8:30 p.m., Comedy Central. David (Gruber) Allen, formerly of "Higgins Boys and Gruber," plays a long-haul trucker who has no clothes and (fortunately) a guitar. David Koechner plays Gerald "T-Bones" Tibbons, his freeloading semi-friend. That may sound like blue-collar comedy gone bad, but give it a chance. The show has a surprisingly understated style and some clever moments.

"Medium," 9 p.m., NBC. This show was scheduled for last week and delayed. Visions of a boy in a well seem unrelated to the search for a politician.
