She'd like to dance with stars

Advertiser Staff

Marlene Kanehailua, a 1991 Kamehameha Schools graduate and a 10-year member of the Portland Trailblazer Dancers, needs your vote.

Kanehailua is among three Portland dancers up for election to the NBA All-Star Dance Team, which will perform during NBA All-Star week, Feb. 16 to 18. You can vote as often as you wish by going to www.nba.com/allstar2007/dance/por.html. Voting ends Friday.

"I feel honored to have been nominated," Kanehailua said in an e-mail to The Advertiser. "My teammates chose me and felt that I would represent the Blazer Dancers and the organization with class, maturity and confidence."

A health and physical education teacher at Aloha High School in Beaverton, Ore., Kanehailua is in her final year as a Trailblazer dancer. Last winter 22 family members flew to Portland to watch her perform.

Kanehailua, originally from Hilo, earned her bachelor's degree from Linfield in 1995 and her master's from Concordia (Ore.) in 2003. Last year, she represented Oregon as a teacher to Japan and was featured in a newspaper teaching hula.
