A 22-year-old 'Ahuimanu man was arrested early yesterday morning in connection with the hit-and-run death of a Kailua bicyclist in April 2005.
Jesse Kawika Boyd was indicted by an O'ahu grand jury Dec. 21 for first-degree negligent homicide, causing an accident involving death or serious bodily injury, and driving without a license in connection with the death of Cortney Silva Jr., a Kailua resident.
A $20,000 bench warrant was issued for Boyd's arrest with the indictment. He surrendered at police headquarters yesterday at 2:10 a.m.
Boyd is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges next week at Circuit Court.
He was also arrested yesterday on four outstanding misdemeanor warrants totalling $900.
Silva, 50, was riding a bicycle against the flow of traffic when he was struck head-on by a Kailua-bound 1992 Buick sedan on Kailua Road near Ho'olai Street about 3:45 a.m. He died at Castle Medical Center about 90 minutes later. Police said Silva was wearing dark clothing when the collision occurred and that his bicycle did not have a headlight.
Boyd, who was 20 at the time, left the scene and was arrested a short time later in the parking lot of a nearby market. Vehicular homicide investigators said speed and alcohol may have been factors in the case.
Boyd reportedly had been drinking alcohol in Kailua before the accident, according to police.
Boyd has two prior convictions for driving under the influence of an intoxicant, driving without a license and third-degree assault.
In Hawai'i, first-degree negligent homicide charges are brought against a driver who causes the death of another person while the driver is operating a vehicle in a negligent manner while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A conviction can result in a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
