Man, 20, says he jumped from moving car to escape captors

A 20-year-old man kidnapped at gunpoint in Kahala Tuesday told police he escaped by jumping from a moving car on University Avenue.

The man escaped about 10:45 p.m. and was not injured, police Detective Gary Lahens said. The 1990 silver Lexus LS stolen earlier in the day was later recovered near 7th Avenue, Lahens said.

The victim told police he did not know the abductors, but Lahens declined further comment on what occurred during the nearly 6 1/2 hours the man was allegedly held captive.

The 20-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were kidnapped when two men with 9 mm pistols carjacked the Lexus from a home on Alakoa Street. The captors released the 21-year-old man near Kahala Elementary School.

Police said they suspect the incident is drug-related. The gunmen remained at large yesterday.
