BYUH women top HPU, 67-65

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's basketball team drew fouls, got to the line and knocked down free throws last night in a victory over Hawai'i Pacific. And Latoya Wily had her 14th double-double of the season after a slow start.

The Seasiders made 27 of 40 free-throw attempts, and Wily scored 21 of her 27 points in the second half and finished with 18 rebounds as BYU-Hawai'i edged Hawai'i Pacific, 67-65, at Neal Blaisdell Arena.

BYU-Hawai'i improved to 6-10 overall and 4-2 in the Pacific West Conference; HPU dropped to 1-16 and 1-4.

Wily, the reigning PacWest Player of the Week, was 6 of 15 from the field and 15 of 21 from the free-throw line.

"It took her a little while to get started," said BYU-Hawai'i coach Wendy Anae.

HPU, which trailed by 14 midway through the second half, closed to 67-65 and called timeout with 3.5 seconds left to set up a final play.

The Sea Warriors couldn't get the ball inbounds from the left sideline just inside half court and called their final timeout.

Natalie Mitchell inbounded to Ashley Jenkins, who drove to the basket and missed an off-balance 16-footer from the right side as time expired.

"We were trying to get a 3-point shot and go for the win, but it didn't happen," HPU coach Elizabeth O'Brien-Gorkowski said. "And then we talked about getting all the way to the basket with the hopes of getting fouled, but it didn't happen. Credit to them. They denied our first play. It was a good job by their coaches."

BYU-Hawai'i was averaging 14.2 free throws made and 22.4 attempted per game.

"The free-throw line has been a struggle for us all year," Anae said. "I don't know what the percentage was tonight, but I think it was pretty good."

HPU post players Jocelyne Norris and Shannon Miyashiro fouled out with 8:19 and 5:15 remaining, respectively.

Kayla Burningham added 12 points and Cheesman had 11 for BYUH, which shot 19 of 56.

Jenkins scored 19, Mitchell added 13 and Kanani Thomas had 12 for HPU.

GRAND CANYON 70, HILO 52

Brandi Steinke had 15 points and seven rebounds as the Antelopes (10-5, 4-0 PacWest) beat the Vulcans (3-10, 2-3) at Phoenix. Amy Ka'aiakamanu scored 13 points and Chrystal Hodson 10 for Hilo.

NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 63, CHAMINADE 53

Ashley Wilson scored 19 points as the Argos (4-12, 3-1 PacWest) defeated the Silverswords (2-12, 1-4) at Belmont, Calif. Brittnee Fonnesbeck had 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Simrin Cummins added 15 points for Chaminade.
