Hawaii Insurance Commissioner goes to China, Japan

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i Insurance Commissioner J.P. Schmidt will be part of a U.S. contingent speaking with government regulators in Japan and China next week as the groups meet to discuss financial issues between the countries.

Schmidt will accompany representatives from the U.S. Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the Securities Exchange Commission, the Office of Comptroller of the Currency and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for the meetings in Beijing and Tokyo.

According to the state, improving regulations will make it easier for Hawai'i and U.S. companies to do business in Japan and China, and may result in firms from those countries finding it easier to do business here.

Schmidt was asked to represent U.S. regulators by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
