The strong and gusty winds that have been keeping the canoes tied up at their moorings are dropping, and there is a small window of opportunity to sail before they drop too much, said mission spokeswoman Kathy Thompson.
Trades are dropping significantly through much of the main Hawaiian islands, but the reduction in wind speed got to the Big Island last.
Polynesian Voyaging Society president Nainoa Thompson said that the canoes expect to immediately sail south to retain as much of the most favorable winds as possible, turning west-southwest once they reach South Point.
