First voyaging canoe leaves the Big Island

Advertiser Staff

The voyaging canoe Alingano Maisu pulled away from the dock at Kawaihae at about 5 p.m., to begin its long voyage to the island of Satawal, where the canoe will be presented as a gift to Micronesian navigator Mau Piailug, who taught the ancient art of non-instrument navigation to Hawaiian sailors.

The voyaging canoe Hokule'a was expected to pull up its anchors soon after Maisu.

The canoes have been waiting for the past week at Kawaihae Harbor for the lifting of small-craft warnings.
