Sparklers bundled together and lit at Campbell High School today caused an explosion that brought the police bomb squad and SWAT team to the campus to investigate, education officials said.

The event occurred about 12:20 p.m. outside the school's building G, police and Department of Education spokesman Greg Knudsen said.

No one was injured. But "Some are saying the sound affected their ears somewhat, but not to the point where anyone has sought any medical attention," Knudsen said.

Neither the Fire Department nor the city's Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene.

After the initial alarm, Knudsen said that it wasn't much.

"It was sparklers bundled together and lit. Not really an explosion, although the police dispatcher referred to it as a bomb," Knudsen said.

"It sounds like it's something that has gotten a few students into some trouble. It's not permissible, even if it's lighting of sparklers, but it's far less serious and threatening than a bomb explosion."

An investigation by the school continues.
