GUITARIST COSGROVE COMING

Mark Cosgrove, a national flatpicking guitar champion, is heading this way to conduct a workshop at the University of Hawai'i and for a gig at the rRed Elephant downtown. Details:

  • 1-5 p.m. Feb. 17 workshop at the UH Music Department, room 212. Fee: $68 general, $58 UHM music majors.     MAPFUMO AT LCC FEB. 23

    Thomas Mapfumo, the voice of chimurenga (struggle music) in strife-torn Zimbabwe — will perform with his band Blacks Unlimited at 8 p.m. Feb. 23 at Leeward Community College Theatre.

    Mapfumo now lives in exile in Oregon but continues to compose for his countrymen, reaching them through pirate shortwave broadcasts and bootleg recordings.
