HEALTH WATCH

KEEP OVARIAN CANCER AT BAY WITH THESE TIPS

Every year, 25,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Here are ways to protect yourself, courtesy of Shape.com:

  • Know the signs: Only 19 percent of cases are detected in the earliest stage. See your doctor if you get persistent abdominal pressure or bloating, pelvic pain, an urgent need to urinate or abnormal bleeding.

  • Get tested: Ask for the CA-125 blood test, the transvaginal ultrasound and a pelvic exam.

  • Exercise: Women who spend six hours a day or more sitting during leisure time may be up to 50 percent more likely to develop the disease than active gals.

  • Eat fruits and veggies: Recent research suggests that kaempferol, an antioxidant in broccoli, kale, strawberries and grapefruit, may reduce ovarian cancer risk by as much as 40 percent.

    FINAL WORD

"People go, 'Yeah, but she hasn't won yet.' If any of her critics could go to school full time, keep up their grades and play world-class golf, I'd like to see it."
