Don't be too hasty in purging your closet. Remember those peg-leg jeans and '80s ankle booties you dumped in last year's New Year's cleaning? They would have been au courant if you had waited just a few months.

"Sometimes you look into your closet and can find treasures," says Suze Yalof Schwartz of Glamour magazine. "They're all things you thought you'd never wear again but should immediately put at the front of your closet."

Schwartz picks five finds that might be lurking in your armoire. No such luck? We'll point you to versions to buy anew.

gold or silver: "Pair gold and silver clothes or accessories with khaki or white. It makes it look fresh. The concept is you want to look high/low. One piece is almost an evening look; paired with a plain khaki makes it work for the office. It's a very versatile style."

Alternative: Gold satin peacock evening bag by Stacey Lapidus, $173 at Girlshop.com.

Big cuffs, bangles: "Pile them on with your button-down white shirt or the three-quarter-sleeve jackets that will be everywhere for spring."

Alternative: Ted Rossi large snake cuff, $102 at www.Girlshop.com.

Long-sleeve dress: "Keep 'em. That's the 'it' look for the season. And what's great about dresses is you always look pulled together."

Alternative: Black floral Diane von Furstenberg Jeanne dress, $298 at www.Nordstrom.com.

Oversized sweater: "Pair the skinny jeans from this season with a boyfriend sweater. Add a belt, and it looks great. It doesn't matter if you get it from your boyfriend, husband or brother — it just has to be oversized." Try a navy sweater with dark-rinse skinny jeans and a bunch of gold or silver bangles.

Alternative: Whiteout sweater by Tracy Reese, $298 at www.Anthropologie.com.

Trench coat: "If you're over it, throw a belt around it or get it hemmed to reach the knee or just above to make it modern."

Alternative: Trovata Fatale trench, $279 on sale at www.eLuxury.com.
