Hilo slips past Grand Canyon

Vince Alvarado capped a 34-point performance with a layup as time expired, lifting Hawai'i-Hilo to a 91-89 victory over Grand Canyon last night in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at Phoenix, Ariz.

Alvarado shot 11 of 17 from the field, including 8 of 11 from 3-point range, for the Vulcans (7-11, 4-2 PacWest).

Travis Sobers, the reigning PacWest Player of the Week, added 25 points and Sam Wilhoite had 18 points and 13 rebounds for Hilo.

Richard Davis scored 27 points, including a jumper that tied the score at 89 with six seconds to play, to lead the Antelopes (8-6, 3-2).

GRAND CANYON 74, HILO 71 (OT)

Rosalyn Nelson scored 25 points as the Antelopes (11-5, 5-0 PacWest) edged the Vulcans (3-11, 2-4) in overtime in a women's game at Phoenix, Ariz. Ashley Kualii scored 19 points and Sheila Azevedo 17 for Hilo, which closed to 72-71 on Azevedo's two free throws with 42 seconds left in overtime. But Jennifer Cobb's steal and layup with 16 seconds left made it 74-71 and a 3-point attempt by the Vulcans missed with a second to play.

CHAMINADE 75, NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 70

Zack Whiting had 23 points and 12 assists as the Silverswords (12-6, 4-2 PacWest) edged the Argos (5-9, 0-5) in a men's game at Belmont, Calif. Darrell Birton added 12 points for Chaminade. Eric Bossom scored 19 points for Notre Dame de Namur.

NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 77, CHAMINADE 47

Corazon Riley scored 19 points as the Argos (5-12, 4-1 PacWest) sank the Silverswords (2-13, 1-5) in a women's game at Belmont, Calif. Brittnee Fonnesbeck had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Simrin Cummins added 15 points for Chaminade.
