Fire destroys wooden building on Kaua'i

Advertiser Staff

KAPA'A – A wooden structure located about 200 yards behind Mahelona Hospital was gutted by fire on Friday afternoon.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire officials estimate damage to the 714-square-foot building at $30,000. The building was built in the 1980s for state Civil Defense but has been vacant in recent years.

An adjoining concrete structure that is used for storage was not damaged by the fire.

Firefighters from the Kapa'a and Lihu'e stations responded to the call at 1:20 p.m. Within 20 minutes of their arrival, the fire was deemed under control and was fully extinguished two hours later.

Previously, the Kapa'a firefighters and rescue specialists from the Lihu'e fire station had been on their way to a rescue at Secret Falls in Wailua. After receiving the call about the fire, the Kapa'a firefighters turned and headed to the fire, while the rescue specialists handled the rescue on their own.

They assisted a woman who sprained her left ankle and twisted her right knee while hiking along the Secret Falls trail. She was taken to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.
