TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Seabiscuit" (2003), 7 p.m., ABC. Life seemed to conspire against the racehorse named Seabiscuit. The horse was too small, the jockey was too big; the owner was on a long losing streak. Somehow, they combined to win. At one point in the Depression haze, Seabiscuit was one of America's favorite athletes. That story was richly told in Laura Hillenbrand's non-fiction book. Then Gary Ross did a beautiful job as screenwriter and director. Ross' film offers a rich portrait of the times and the characters. Tobey Maguire is ideal as the jockey, with Jeff Bridges as the owner and Chris Cooper as the trainer.
