Ka Iwi guardrail project begins tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources tomorrow will begin installation of roadside guardrails along the Ka Iwi State Wilderness Area in East Honolulu.

Approximately 1,750 linear feet of guardrail will be installed along the stretch of Kalaniana'ole Highway, starting near the Hawaii Kai Golf Course entrance/exit and ending at the entrance/exit of Wawamalu Beach, near Sandy Beach.

The new guardrails are part of the master plan for the wilderness park area. They will help improve safety for people along the scenic corridor and protect the wilderness park from unauthorized off-road vehicles, said Peter Young, DLNR chairman.

The project will require the closure of the Waimanalo-bound lane on Kalaniana'ole for approximately six weeks, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.

Drivers should be prepared for possible delays due to the lane closure. For safety, traffic-control measures will be implemented and off-duty police officers will direct traffic at both ends of the lane closure.

The project contractor is GP Roadway Solutions Inc., and the contract cost is $267,720. Completion is expected by the end of June.

Last summer, the department completed construction of a new lookout and parking area at the Makapu'u Point section of the park, and the construction of a second lot for hikers to the Makapu'u Lighthouse lookout.
