Voyaging canoes back on Big Island for repair

Voyaging canoes Hokule'a and Alingano Maisu are anchored in Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island for repairs to a steering sweep.

The canoes returned to the Big Island last night after noticing a crack in the sweep on one of the canoes. A sweep on a voyaging canoe is a 24-foot long paddle used to steer the canoe.

Mission spokeswoman Kathy Thompson said the mission would not identify which canoe had the damage.

"There are two canoes. But we are one voyage," she said.
