Plan to widen Queen Street on hold

Advertiser Staff

The state agency governing development in Kaka'ako is poised to cancel construction contract for improvements to a section of Queen Street, and on Wednesday will seek advice from the public on how to proceed.

The Hawai'i Community Development Authority plans to widen the road, add sidewalks and storm drains, put utilities underground and improve sewer and water lines along the narrow, flood-prone section of Queen Street between Kamake'e Street and Ward Avenue.

But some of the 25 landowners in the area, mostly small businesses, opposed the work because they were to pay $2.9 million, or 19 percent, of the $15.6 million bill for the project, which is the third of four sections of Queen being turned into an major transportation artery through Kaka'ako.

Gov. Linda Lingle approved the plan nearly two years ago, and the project was expected to start in March 2005. But design changes mandated by the city and other factors led to higher costs that resulted in the state Attorney General's office suggesting the agency cancel its construction contract.

The agency will provide information and accept suggestions on how to proceed at Ward Warehouse's Kewalo Conference Room from 2-6 p.m. on Wednesday.
