Macy's customers in Hawai'i donate most to charity

News Release

Of the 195 Macy's West stores in eight states and Guam that participated in the "Thanks for Sharing" community service campaign over the 2006 holiday season, a phenomenal 10 of the top 10 stores were in Macy's Hawaii region, which includes Guam. Macy's Hawaii and Guam raised over $375,000 for local charities through Thanks for Sharing. In its entirety, Macy's West raised more than $2 million for the local branches and affiliates of four nonprofit agencies.

"Our customers' incredible aloha spirit and generosity enabled the Macy's Hawaii region to raise more than $375,000 during the Thanks for Sharing campaign to give back to our own community," said Deena Nichols, senior vice president and director of stores, Hawai'i and Guam. "Macy's is committed to supporting the communities where we live and work. Thanks for Sharing is an illustration of what we can accomplish for worthwhile causes by working together."

The Hawai'i region stores achieving Top 10 Thanks for Sharing status in 2006 are:

1. Downtown

2. Kahala

3. Kailua

4. Prince Kuhio (Hilo)

5. Windward Mall

6. Pearlridge

7. Ala Moana

8. Micronesia Mall (Guam)

9. Ka'ahumanu (Maui)

10. Kukui Grove (Kaua'i)

The Ala Moana store also placed first among all Macy's West stores in total number of Thanks for Sharing customer enrollments.

Macy's "Thanks for Sharing" campaign ran from Oct. 4 through Dec. 30, 2006. The campaign invited Macy's shoppers to earn 10 percent rewards on qualifying purchases made with their Macy's card, after purchasing a $25 enrollment fee. For every $25 "Thanks for Sharing" enrollment made on a Macy's card, Macy's donated $10 to four nonprofit charitable organizations.

Funds were divided among the charities in each store's community. The designated charities were the Boy's and Girl's Clubs, America's Second Harvest (Hawaii Foodbank), Aloha United Way and the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women Campaign.

The Top 10 rankings were based on a store?s success as measured by the number of Thanks for Sharing enrollments as a percentage of sales, thus leveling the playing field between smaller and larger stores.

In 2006, Macy's Hawaii region stores captured eight out of the Top 10 Thanks for Sharing spots. In 2005, they captured nine of the Top 10.
