The American Library Association today named its top books and video for children and young adults for 2007 in a Seattle press conference.

Of the dozen or so awards and honorable mentions in the Youth Media Awards program, the two best-known are the Newbery and the Caldecott prizes.

The winners are, as follows:

  • John Newbery Medal for outstanding contribution to children's literature: "The Higher Power of Lucky," by Susan Patron, illustrated by Matt Phelan (Simon & Schuster/Richard Jackson).

  • Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished American picture book for children: "Flotsam," illustrated by David Wiesner (Clarion).
