Rail installation to close Waimanalo-bound lane

Advertiser Staff

Installation of roadside guardrails along the Ka Iwi State Wilderness Area in East Honolulu starts today, the Department of Land and Natural Resources said.

The project will require the closure of the Waimanalo-bound lane on Kalaniana'ole Highway for six weeks, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Drivers should prepare for delays due to the lane closure. For safety, traffic control measures will be implemented including warning road signs, and off-duty police officers will direct traffic at either end of the lane closure.

Approximately 1,750 linear feet of guard rail will be installed along the stretch of Kalaniana'ole Highway, starting from a short distance north of the Hawai'i Kai Golf Course entrance/exit and ending at the entrance/exit of Wawamalu Beach, near Sandy Beach.

This protective guardrail is part of the master plan for this wilderness park area. It will help improve the safety for people along this scenic corridor, and protect the wilderness park from unauthorized off-road vehicles, said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.

Project contractor is GP Roadway Solutions, Inc. and the contract cost is $267,720. Completion is expected by end of June, 2007.

Last summer DLNR completed construction of a new lookout and parking area at the Makapu'u Point section of the park, and the construction of a second parking lot for hikers to the Makapu'u Lighthouse lookout.
