Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i women's basketball player Tanya Smith has been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for helping the 'Bows split a pair of conference games last week.

It's the first WAC Player of the Week honor for Smith and the first WAC Player of the Week honor for the 'Bows this season.

Smith, a junior forward from Sydney, Australia, averaged 18.0 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 71 percent from the floor in two games last week.

Smith helped Hawai'i end a five-game losing streak with 24 points and nine rebounds in UH's 71-61 win over Idaho. She made her first 10 shots of the game, before finishing 11-of-12 from the floor. Smith also tallied 12 points and 13 rebounds in a loss to first-place Boise State for her third double-double in the last four games.

She currently leads the WAC in rebounding (11.5 rpg) and field goal percentage (.620), and is third in scoring (17.2 ppg) through the first six conference games.

Smith and the 'Bows (7-11, 1-5 WAC) will play a pair of WAC games at San Jose State on Thursday and at Utah State on Saturday.
