Kaua'i visitor killed in tour bus-car crash identified

Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i police today identified the 51-year-old visitor killed yesterday in a collision between a rental car and a tour bus on Kuhio Highway as Michael Caughran of Alaska.

Caughran's passengers, his wife and son, Jacquelyn Smail, 50, and Sean Caughran, 23, both of Alaska, were injured in the accident, as was bus driver Jerry Elwood, 60, of 'Oma'o. No one else was in the bus.

All three injured individuals were treated at Wilcox Hospital and released.

The accident occurred at about 4:15 p.m. when both vehicles were traveling north on Kuhio Highway at Hanama'ulu and the car attempted to make a U-turn in front of the Polynesian Adventures bus.

The bus broadsided the car, pushing it across the highway and onto the shoulder.

The accident closed the highway for more than three hours. Police diverted some traffic onto an emergency bypass road, but many drivers were stuck in traffic for several hours.
