Voyaging canoes expected to leave this afternoon

Advertiser Staff

The voyaging canoes Hokule'a and Alingano Maisu are scheduled to resume their voyage to Micronesia this afternoon after completing repairs to a damaged steering sweep.

The canoes left Kawaihae Friday afternoon but discovered a crack in the steering sweep aboard one of the canoes Saturday. They pulled into Kealakekua Bay that night and unlashed the sweep for repair on shore. The repairs have been completed.

"Leadership set the departure of Hokule'a and Alingano Maisu for tonight, possibly as early as sunset," said an e-mailed statement from Kathy Thompson of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and Pomai Bertelmann of Maisu builders Na Kalai Wa'a Moku o Hawai'i.
