Detour bypass to open on Hawai'i Belt Road

Advertiser Staff

On the Big Island, a detour bypass road on Hawai'i Belt Road (Route 19) will officially open to traffic today at approximately 4 p.m.

The detour road is just south of the town of Pa'auilo at mile marker 35.2.

The new two-lane mauka detour road will bypass the Kawaili'i Bridge, which was damaged in the Big Island earthquake on Oct. 15, and will remain in use until a permanent bridge is built.

Following the earthquake, traffic at the bridge has been controlled using a pair of portable traffic signals, contra-flowing vehicles through one lane. The detour road will remove that traffic bottleneck.
