Moon seeks $15.5 million for Kapolei family court site

Chief Justice Ronald Moon asked state lawmakers this morning to approve another $15.5 million for the proposed Family Court and juvenile detention facility in Kapolei.

The state Legislature approved $95 million in its 2005 legislative for the project, but because of rising construction costs following Hurricane Katrina, the judiciary had to scale back plans for the complex, Moon said.

Moon asked for the $15.5 million in order to complete construction of three of the courtrooms and secured holding cells for the scaled-back project.

The complex is scheduled to be completed in 2010.

The chief justice made his request in his State of the Judiciary address to state senators and representatives at the senate chambers at the state Capitol.

Moon delivers the address every other year at the beginning of the legislative session.
