Judge drops drug charge against Maui teacher

WAILUKU, Maui — A Maui judge has dropped drug trafficking charges against two suspects arrested in a case involving the largest drug seizure in Maui County history.

Wailuku District Court Judge Barclay MacDonald today ruled prosecutors didn't present enough evidence linking Ohia Lehua Aniban, 33, a teacher at Christ the King School in Kahului, or Wallace H. Koga, 57, to the alleged drug ring.

However, the judge ruled there was enough probable cause to maintain charges against Aniban's husband, Patrick Aniban, 43, and co-defendant Matthew P. Otterson, 35, of Makawao.

Maui police on Friday recovered 18.5 pounds of cocaine and 6 pounds of crystal methamphetamine worth an estimated $1.5 million from the Anibans' Pu'unene Avenue home in Kahului, according to Capt. Gerald Matsunaga of the Maui Police Department's Vice Section. Also seized were four vehicles and a motorcycle, 1 ounce of marijuana and $114,000 in cash.

Patrick Aniban and Otterson are charged with first-degree methamphetamine trafficking, first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, two counts of possessing drug paraphernalia and second-degree promotion of a detrimental drug. Otterson is additionally charged with two third-degree drug offenses and another count of paraphernalia possession for items found in his truck.

Bail has been set at more than $1.5 million each and they remain in custody at the Maui Community Correctional Center.
