Even after sitting out a year, Brigham Young senior utility player/designated hitter Apana Nakayama still garnered the respect of Mountain West Conference coaches.

Nakayama, a 2000 graduate of Moloka'i, was named to the the preseason all-MWC preseason team.

Nakayama redshirted last year because of a knee injury. He batted .344 in 59 games during 2005 with 47 RBIs and was selected to the All-MWC all-tournament team after hitting .615.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Gonzaga junior guard Rachel Kane (Punahou '03) had five points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 61-48 win Saturday over Portland as the Zags improved to 5-0 in conference play and 13-8 overall.

  • Columbia junior forward Becky Hogue (Punahou '03) had four points and a team-high seven rebounds in a 67-51 loss to Cornell Saturday.

  • Cal Lutheran junior point guard Tiffiny Shim (Kamehameha '03) recorded her first double-double of the season, with 20 points and 11 rebounds, in a 55-47 win over Whittier Jan. 11.

    MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Pepperdine senior outside hitter Jon Grobe ('Iolani '02 of Kane'ohe) had 11 kills, eight digs and two blocks in a 35-33, 26-30, 30-23, 24-30, 11-15 loss to Long Beach State Friday.

  • Lindenwood (St. Charles, Mo.) sophomore outside hitter Devin Shiroma (Damien '05 of Honolulu) had 14 kills, two blocks and seven digs in a 33-35, 30-20, 30-22, 24-30, 15-10 win over Quincy (Ill.) Jan. 17.

    Quincy junior setter Mike Contee ('Iolani '04 of 'Aiea) had three kills, a block, 49 assists and 10 digs.

    Shiroma had 11 kills in a 30-20, 30-27, 30-22 victory over Graceland Sunday.

    Hawai'i players on Graceland's roster are junior defensive specialist Ian Woodward (Maryknoll '03 of Mililani), freshman outside hitter Ronson Olaso (Kamehameha '05 of Waialua), senior outside hitter Al Dupont (Pearl City of Honolulu), freshman defensive specialist Noah Casaquit (Moanalua of Honolulu), sophomore setter Ainoa Miyashiro (Kamehameha '04 of Honolulu), and senior outside hitter/right side Clint Torres (Leilehua '01 of Wahiawa).

    TRACK AND FIELD

  • California-Berkeley sophomore Fran Weems (Kealakehe '05 of Kailua, Kona) ran on the winning 4x400-meter relay team (3:48.93) at the Hampton Inn & Suites Classic Saturday.

    SWIMMING AND DIVING

  • Air Force sophomore Bryan Avery (Mililani '05) placed fourth in the 1,000 freestyle (10:25.01) and 500 freestyle (4:53.63) in a dual meet against Denver Saturday.

    Sophomore Kai Yamashiro ('Iolani '05 of Kane'ohe) was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.63) and third in the 100 backstroke (52.60).

  • Northern Arizona sophomore Tami Binek (Waiakea '02) was second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.58) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (1: 58.26) in a dual meet against Washington State Jan. 13.

    Senior Cassie Lyons (Waiakea of Hilo) finished second in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.94).

    Freshman Meredith Egloria (Kapolei '06) is also on the squad but did not compete.

  • N.C. State sophomore Andrew Lester (Moanalua '05) recorded second-place finishes in the 1000 freestyle (9:20.86) and the 500 freestyle (4:34.97) in a dual meet with South Carolina Jan. 13.

  • Lindenwood (St. Charles, Mo.) senior Erin Nakamoto (Kalani '03) was second in the 200 individual medley (2: 15.73) and 100 butterfly (1:00.74).

    Junior Jon Lau ('Iolani '04) was second in the 200 butterfly (1:58.93), fourth in the 100 butterfly (52.59) and fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:02.44).
