Voyaging canoes coast toward Marshall Islands

By Jan TenBruggencate
Advertiser Staff Writer

Voyaging canoes Hokule'a and Alingano Maisu, after coasting at a leisurely pace down the southwest coast of the Big Island Tuesday night, turned west yesterday.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society reported that the Maisu yesterday had a 4:30 p.m. position of 19:04 north latitude and 156.52 west longitude.

The canoes during the previous five and a half hours traveled about 29 statute miles in a westerly direction. That put their speed at about 5.2 mph.

The canoes left Kealakekua Bay about 5 p.m. Tuesday after making repairs on a steering sweep. They are headed for landfall at Majuro Atoll in the Marshall Islands, and plan to pass close to Johnston Atoll along the way.
