The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team started its climb up the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 72-52 blowout of San Jose State Thursday night.

A crowd of 3,719 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the Rainbow Warriors snap a three-game losing streak to improve to 11-9 overall and 2-5 in the WAC. Hawai'i in seventh place in the nine-team conference.

San Jose State dropped to 2-17 overall and 1-6 in the WAC with its 20th consecutive loss away from San Jose, Calif.

Matt Lojeski led a balanced Hawai'i offense with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. P.J. Owsley added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, Matt Gibson had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Ahmet Gueye contributed nine points and 13 rebounds.

Bobby Nash added 10 points, and reserve center Stephen Verwers contributed six points and a career-high 13 rebounds, including 11 in the decisive first half.

Hawai'i dominated the boards, grabbing 53 rebounds to San Jose State's 34.

The Spartans did not help their cause, shooting 26.6 percent from the field.

The 'Bows led form start to finish, and were never really challenged, thanks mostly to a horrific first-half shooting performance by the Spartans.

San Jose State opened the game by making just 2 of its first 13 field goals (15.4 percent). Hawai'i opened the game by shooting 54.5 percent (6 of 11) and jumped to a 14-6 lead.

The 'Bows then went on an astonishing 24-0 run to take an insurmountable 38-8 lead with 2:42 remaining in the half.

The Spartans went 0 for 14 during the surge, and had 16 consecutive possessions without scoring a point.

Hawai'i eventually took a 40-15 lead at intermission. The 'Bows shot 53.1 percent from the field in the first half to San Jose State's 19.4 percent.

The 'Bows also out-rebounded the Spartans 29-13 in the first half, with Verwers and Gueye combining to grab 17 first-half rebounds.

The 'Bows increased their lead to as many as 33 points in the second half, and then cruised the rest of the way.

The Spartans got as close as 15 points with a flurry of 3-pointers late in the game, but the 'Bows pushed the lead back up to 68-45 with 2:11 remaining. The Hawai'i reserves then came in to close the game.

Menelik Barbary and Carlton Spencer led the Spartans with 15 points each.

Hawai'i will next play a home WAC game against Utah State on Monday.
