Smoky park fire closes Haleakala's summit center

Advertiser Staff

KULA, Maui — Intense smoke from a forest fire on neighboring state land forced a closure of Haleakala National Park's visitor center at the summit today.

The fire has burned at least 30 acres in the Polipoli State Park since in dense forest at the 6,500- to 7,000-foot elevation.

No homes are in danger, according to Maui Fire Department officials.

Wind shifts funneled the smoke column from the fire up the ridge of Haleakala and over the summit, enveloping the backcountry and crater wilderness. Visibility is less than 100 feet, according to park employee Mike Townsend.

"Its nasty up there right now. The smoke is very caustic," Townsend said. The Headquarters Visitor Center at 7,000-foot level remains open.

Ranger programs and demonstrations have been moved to the headquarters and Hosmer Grove.

The summit area and backcountry remain open to the public. However, visitors are being advised not to go beyond the headquarters area. Polipoli State Park also is closed.
