Best bet: At 99, Tapia still strumming, weaving tales

Advertiser Staff

Jazz 'ukulele pioneer Bill Tapia, who played at the opening of The Royal Hawaiian hotel in 1927, celebrates his 99th birthday with a pair of performances downtown.

Tapia was born on Jan. 1, 1908. A great storyteller, his witty reminiscences of Hawai'i almost outshine the music.

The celebration takes place in the downtown coffee shop venue the rRed Elephant. Shows tonight and tomorrow start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $27.50 and can be purchased at the rRed Elephant or honoluluboxoffice.com.
