Burglaries, vandalism delay 'Ewa Sugar Mill upgrades

'EWA — A series of burglaries and vandalism is delaying construction efforts in a city project at the old 'Ewa Sugar Mill complex.

The $2.2 million renovation of two old plantation buildings, initially set to be completed in October, is now slated to be finished in March.

Since June, there have been at least eight incidents involving break-ins, property theft, vandalism and property damages at the worksite, Eugene Lee, director of the City Department of Design and Construction said during a press conference this morning.

"It's a sad fate for the old 'Ewa sugar facilities," Lee said. "But more than that, the people who are doing this are costing the contractors and all of us taxpayers time and money."
