Detour bypass opens on Hawai'i Belt Road

On the Big Island, a detour bypass road on Hawai'i Belt Road (Route 19) opened to traffic Tuesday.

The detour road is just south of the town of Pa'auilo at mile marker 35.2.

The new two-lane mauka detour road bypasses the Kawaili'i Bridge, which was damaged in the Big Island earthquake on Oct. 15, and will remain in use until a permanent bridge is built.

Following the earthquake, traffic at the bridge has been controlled using a pair of portable traffic signals, contra-flowing vehicles through one lane. The detour road will remove that traffic bottleneck.
