Visitor arrivals flat at 7.4 million, spending up in 2006

Visitor arrivals were flat for all of 2006 but spending increased 2.9 percent to a new record, the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism said today.A total of 7.4 million travelers visited Hawai'i in 2006, which was virtually unchanged from 2005. But visitor expenditures increased to a record $12 billion in 2006 thanks to a 9 percent rise in spending by Mainland tourists.
For December, arrivals increased 1 percent to 662,380 from the year-earlier month while spending was flat at $1.1 billion.
