Advertiser Staff

Visitor arrivals were flat for all of 2006 but spending increased 2.9 percent to a new record, the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism said today.

A total of 7.4 million travelers visited Hawai'i in 2006, which was virtually unchanged from 2005. But visitor expenditures increased to a record $12 billion in 2006 thanks to a 9 percent rise in spending by Mainland tourists.

For December, arrivals increased 1 percent to 662,380 from the year-earlier month while spending was flat at $1.1 billion.
