Pahoa teen dies in one-vehicle accident on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

A one-car crash on the Big Island claimed the life of a 19-year-old Pahoa man.

Police identified the victim of the Thursday accident as Champie K.S. Choy Foo. He was driving south at 3:07 a.m. on Route 130 when his sedan ran off the road and slammed into a rock embankment at the intersection of Route 130 and Pohaku Place in Keaau, police said.

A 22-year-old male passenger was critically injured in the crash.

Both men were initially taken to Hilo Medical Center but flown to The Queen's Medical Center on O'ahu, where Choy Foo died yesterday. The condition of the other man was not available.

Police did not know if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the third traffic fatality this year on the Big Island. Last year at this time, there had been two deaths.
