Sunday is last day for marathon early registration

Advertiser Staff

Early walkup registration for the Dec. 9 Honolulu Marathon is being accepted through Sunday at Niketown in Waikiki.

So far, more than 2,700 have signed up. Last year, a record 3,070 signed up during the early registration period.

Registration will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The entry fee is $20 — a fraction of the usual cost — for all Hawai'i residents and for military members stationed in the state. Last month's entry fee was $125.

The fee includes a commemorative ChampionChip timing chip. The chip laces into the runner's shoe and works with timing mats along the route to produce a precise timing record.

Free gifts will also be distributed while supplies last.

Early registrants can purchase tickets to the Honolulu Marathon's

lu'au/concert at the Waikiki Shell on Dec. 7 for $20. Each registrant will be entitled to purchase up to six companion tickets at the same price.

The lu'au/concert, Hawai'išs largest catered event, will include an all-you-can-eat dinner as well as entertainment.

The Honolulu Marathon was Hawai'i's largest participatory sporting event in 2006, with 24,575 finishers in the marathon and 4,888 in the event's concurrent 10-kilometer Race Day Walk. It was America's third largest marathon last year and the world's sixth largest.
