Advertiser Staff

Mark Rodrigues pitched 5 1/3 strong innings, and Jorge Franco hit his first career home run, to lead Hawai'i over Santa Clara, 5-4, Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.

Rodrigues (1-0) gave up two runs, seven hits and a walk with one strikeout in 5 1/3 innings. Tyler Davis pitched the final 3 2/3 innings for his first save.

Nate Garcia (0-1) allowed four runs, six hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

The Broncos took a 2-0 lead in the second. Nathan Faulkner led off with a ground single to short and took third on Evan LeBlanc's single to center.

Carl Bacon's squeeze scored Faulkner and sent LeBlanc to second. With LeBlanc moving on the pitch, he scored on Ryan Conan's single to left to make it 2-0.

After Jon Karcich grounded to third for a force out at second, he was thrown out at the plate after Gabe Alcantar doubled to left. Left fielder Jorge Franco retrieved the ball quickly in foul territory and hit shortstop Eli Christensen, whose relay to catcher Landon Hernandez nailed Conan.

The Rainbows sent nine batters to the plate in a four-run fourth. With one out, Brandon Haislet walked and took second on Kris Sanchez's single. After Christensen flied out to left, the two runners scored on Evan Zimny's double to center. Hernandez then reached first on a fielder's choice grounder to third when third baseman Alcantar touched third on a nonforce situation in which Zimny was safe at third.

Ryan Asato made him pay for the lapse with an RBI single to center to give UH a 3-2 lead. Franco's single to third loaded the bases to set up Nathan Young's RBI single to right. On the play, Franco was caught between second and third to end the inning.

The Broncos got an unearned run in the seventh against reliever Tyler Davis. With one out, Tommy Medica reached first on shortstop Christensen's throwing error, and one out later scored on Faulkner's double to center. After LeBlanc was hit by a pitch, Bacon fouled out to third to end the inning with Santa Clara pulling to 4-3.

Hawai'i got the run back in the bottom of the seventh when Franco led off with a home run to left off reliever Alex Rivers to make it 5-3.

Santa Clara scored in the eighth. Jon Karcich was hit by a pitch with one out and took third on Alcantar's double to left. Kevin Drever's sacrifice fly to left pulled the Broncos to 5-4.
