State trying to reunite property with owners

Advertiser Staff

Representatives of the state's Unclaimed Property Outreach Program will attend the Chinese New Year Festival from noon to 8 p.m. next Friday and Saturday at the Chinese Cultural Plaza, 100 North Beretania St., to help people search for unclaimed property and file claims, and to answer questions about the program.

The state currently holds about $120 million of unclaimed property in safekeeping, hoping to turn it over to the rightful owners. During the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2006, the program returned over $5 million in property.

The unclaimed property program receives and holds abandoned or unclaimed property such as dormant checking and savings accounts, unclaimed inheritances, shares of stock, uncashed payroll checks, uncashed dividend checks, deposits held by utilities, insurance and medical refunds, and safe deposit box contents. There is no charge for the service.

Interested individuals may conduct an online search by going to the Web site www.unclaimed property.hawaii.gov or by calling the Unclaimed Property Program at 586-1589.
