Santa Clara stops Rainbows, 3-2, in series finale

Advertiser Staff

Carl Bacon drove in two runs, including the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the eighth inning, to lead Santa Clara over Hawai'i, 3-2, at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Broncos avoided a sweep in the three-game, nonconference baseball series.

Nicholas Rhodes (0-1) allowed two runs and six hits with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings for UH (2-1).

Jeff Lombard (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Broncos (1-2).

UH starter Matt Daly went five innings, allowing a run, six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

As with the first two games of the series, the Broncos took the lead first. With one out in the second, Evan LeBlanc walked, took second on Bacon's single and scored on Ryan Conan's ground double to left.

But Daly struck out Jon Karcich and got Gabe Alcantar on a fly to center to keep it a one-run game.

The Rainbows tied it in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Brandon Haislet doubled to left and took third when Kris Sanchez reached first safely when first baseman Conan dropped second baseman Kevin Drever's throw after a grounder for an error. Eli Christensen grounded a single up the middle to score Haislet to tie the game at 1. Evan Zimny grounded out to second to end the inning.

Hawai'i gave Daly the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Haislet bunted to third for a single, stole second on a pitchout and scored on Sanchez's double off the left-center field wall to give UH a 2-1 lead. Christensen grounded out to short to end the inning.

But the Broncos tied it in the sixth against Rhodes. With one out, LeBlanc reached on an infield single up the middle that second baseman Nathan Young gloved, but whose throw to first was too late. After a balk, Bacon hit a similar grounder that Young fielded on a dive, but the ball got away, allowing LeBlanc to score on the infield hit. Right fielder Matt Roquemore then robbed Conan of a possible extra-base hit with an over-the-shoulder catch of a deep drive. Karcich then grounded to third for a force at second to end the inning.

Santa Clara took the lead in the eighth against Rhodes. With one out, Nathan Faulkner doubled to left, took third on LeBlanc's single to left and scored on Bacon's single to center to make it 3-2. With runners at first and second, Rhodes was pulled for Josh Schneider, who retired the next two batters on fly outs on two pitches.
